Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of fitness level do I need to start?

There is absolutely no minimum fitness level required to begin training with us.  You just need the intention to give it your best, and the ability to set aside your ego and work hard.  Clear eyes, full hearts. That’s it.

Can I cancel at any time?

All of our monthly memberships auto-renew for convenience, but the commitment is month-to-month.  We don’t do contracts: you can cancel at the end of any month.

Can I skip the intro course?

Existing Powerlifters who have been taking class regularly at another location for at least 6 months may proceed directly to group classes.

Is Powerlifting dangerous?

In short: no more than any other physical pursuit, whether it’s running, playing soccer, or even yoga!  There is an inherent risk to participating in any physical activity, and injuries do sometimes happen.  However, the benefits of physical activity far outweigh the risk of participation.

We are dedicated to keeping our athletes safe. Our coaches are always keeping a close eye on form and making sure everyone is moving well.  We are not a “no quitting” gym: if something hurts or is otherwise wrong, we will pull you out of the workout.

Our coaches strike the difficult balance between pushing athletes who need motivation, and pulling back athletes who are pushing themselves to the point of injury.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes! We offer a 10% discount to the following athletes —

NYPD, FDNY, EMS, Armed Forces
Full time student* or full time teacher
Family Discount (10% off each additional family member)

Please note that discounts can’t be combined.

* Must show ID and class schedule OR certificate of enrollment specifying full-time status of at least 12 credit hours.

What’s Powerlifting?

Powerlifting is “the sport of strength.” It is concerned with building strength in three lifts: the back squat, the deadlift, and the bench press.

Primal in its simplicity, powerlifting isn’t always pretty, nor is it especially glamorous. But it is practical, unquestionably hardcore, and a virtual guarantee you will never again struggle to move your couch.

Why Powerlifting?

“Strong people are harder to kill than weak people and more useful in general.”
— Mark Rippetoe, author of Starting Strength

Why Brooklyn Barbell?

You have quite a few options for getting and staying in shape these days. Why choose us? Here are a few reasons!

WE’RE COACHES, NOT TRAINERS

Our coaches are professionals who have dedicated their careers to the accumulation of knowledge about the human body and all the amazing athletic things of which it is capable. They are here to guide you on your health and fitness journey with the highest standards and utmost integrity and care.

OUR APPROACH IS INDIVIDUAL & HOLISTIC

We’re here to help you reach your fitness goals, and to guide you towards long term health and happiness. We meet you where you are, taking into account your experience level, how often you work out, your age, what you’re eating, how you’re sleeping, how much stress you’re under, what your movement patterns look like, and what mobility restrictions you have. We aim to get you fit and healthy now, and keep you fit and healthy for a lifetime. And don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about looking better naked: that’s a fortunate side-effect!
